Spicy Mushroom Soup

Spicy mushroom soup, a popular street food in Chennai, brings together the warmth of South Indian spices with the earthy flavors of mushrooms. This versatile dish can be crafted with any mushroom variety, but the classic choice of white or brown mushrooms lends it a comforting familiarity.

Let's see how to make this street food at home!


- Pepper

- Turmeric

- Coriander powder

- Salt

- Mushrooms

- Corn starch - 1 tablespoon

- 6 cups water

- Oil - 2 teaspoons

- Green Chilli - 1

- Ginger garlic paste - 1 teaspoon

- Spicy crispy Cornflakes for garnish (if available)

Preparation Time: 

- Approximately 30 minutes


- 4 servings

Here's a step-by-step guide:

1.Clean the mushrooms thoroughly by adding all-purpose flour to the water, ensuring they're perfectly clean.

2. Dice the mushrooms into small pieces and set them aside for later use.

3. Green Chili Paste: For that kick of heat, chop 2 green chilies and grind them into a fine paste.

4. Spice Mix: In a separate bowl, mix 2 spoons of pepper, 1 spoon each of garam masala, turmeric, and coriander powder. This spice mix is the heart of the soup.

5. Corn Starch Mix: Separately, blend 2 spoons of corn starch in a bowl of water until it resembles milk. This will be your thickening agent.

6.Heat 2 spoons of sunflower oil in a pan. Begin the aroma journey by adding 1 spoon of ginger-garlic paste, followed by the chili paste.

7. Add the prepared spice mix to the pan and sauté until the flavors are well blended.

8. Pour 6 bowls of water into the pan, bringing it to a simmer.

9. Add the chopped mushrooms to the hot water and cover the pan, letting the mushrooms cook thoroughly.

10. Once boiling, stir in the corn starch mixture and let it boil for 2 more minutes. Your Chennai-style mushroom Soup is now ready to serve!

Note: Do add some crispy spicy cornflakes for garnish if you have them handy. This elevates the taste of soup.
